Surviving flood, fire and reinvention
“Great visit this morning – feeling very inspired by the innovation”
In August, members of the Bradford & Airedale Manufacturing Alliance and Leeds Manufacturing Alliance were treated to a hugely enjoyable and informative visit to A W Hainsworth in Stanningley.
Ably led by Lyndsey Bray and her colleague Ivan, the visitors were greeted with refreshments in the Boardroom and then conducted to an exhibition showing the long and fascinating history of A W Hainsworth and then given a detailed introduction to the company which has survived flood, fire and the decimation of the British textile industry to rise once again as a major global player.
The Manufacturing Alliances were shown the vast product range manufactured at the mill including fabric for designer clothing, furniture, military/emergency services uniforms, work wear, cushion covers, striking crimson ceremonial tunics for the Coldstream Guards, woven aircraft seats, snooker/pool table felt in an array of colours and even woollen blankets, sold exclusively to the Canadian market.
This was followed by a tour around the with friendly and enthusiastic members of staff explaining each station used in processing Lamb’s wool, Merino wool and Cashmere, sourced from Britain, Australia and New Zealand, through blending, carding, spinning, warping and finally weaving the wool into products exported all over the world.
Everybody obviously enjoyed the morning, one member even commenting that she had learnt about disruptive technology on paper but had only fully understood its true value when viewed in action at A W Hainsworth. Other members also showed their appreciation, within one hour of the visit, members were e-mailing with comments such as;
“Thanks again for another fantastic factory tour. “
“Well done to all involved at your end and please pass on my thanks to the team at AW Hainsworth for their time and courtesy in showing us around.”
“I think the tours are an absolutely brilliant idea, even if the hosts aren’t in the same industry, their openness and experience as business entities are always interesting and informative.”
“Great visit this morning – feeling very inspired by the innovation.”
Returning to the Boardroom, Lyndsey, Ivan and the Company were thanked by Stephen Wright, Chair of Bradford and Airedale Manufacturing Alliance.
