Cobbydog grows overseas sales through Enterprise Europe Network support

Cobbydog is a leading British manufacturer of cold pressed dog food – a production method that allows the meats to be processed in a way that retains all the nutrients of raw food. The food is also fortified with a turmeric-based mixture that increases the bio-availability of key ingredients – a mixture that Cobbydog calls TurmerAid. This provides a complete and balanced food solution for man’s best friend.

The Keighley-based business was established in 1975 by Eddy Horner and Stephen Leigh. Over the course of 40 years, Eddy and Stephen built a successful business that they were able to pass on to their children.

Under the ownership of a new generation, Cobbydog set its sights on reaching new markets overseas and leveraging this international growth to fund new investment into the business.

Director, Katy van Suilichem, reached out to the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) team at the West & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce to help them develop and implement an international growth strategy.

Working with EEN adviser, Guy Foster, Cobbydog identified key geographic markets and routes into these markets. The EEN team were then able to introduce Cobbydog to a distributor of pet foods in Canada, with whom they concluded a distribution services agreement; and a pet food brand in Germany, with whom they have signed a manufacturing agreement to develop and produce private label dog food.

Additional advisory support was provided by EEN adviser, Joseph Kovacs, who helped them understand the process of exporting processed and canned pet food to Canada under the framework of the EU’s Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement.

The extra income from these international partnership agreements will be invested in new machinery to increase productivity and drive innovation.

Cobbydog was also introduced to an adviser from the Manufacturing Growth Programme, who is providing support and grant funding to enable the upgrade of existing machinery that will allow them to diversify their operations into the bio-fuel sector.

EEN continues to work with Cobbydog on their long term international expansion.
