Leeds and Madrid join forces in metal can-making venture

A joint venture between Leeds manufacturing firm Meltog and Madrid-based distributor Cepeda is opening up new export opportunities in South America, North Africa and the Middle East.

Meltog is the UK’s largest manufacturer of bespoke shredding machinery for the waste and recycling industry, one of its three three manufacturing divisions.

Its largest division is metal packaging machinery, where it enjoys an industry-leading reputation, and also manufactures industrial filter tube manufacturing equipment.

Last year saw 35% growth in sales and, in mid-2018, Meltog sold two new machines used in the manufacture of spiral metal filters to the Expanded Metal Company based in Hartlepool.

The joint venture with Cepeda was formed two years ago with an eye to Brexit and the implications for access to markets.

Meltog’s managing director Julian Heyworth explains: “The uncertainties surrounding Brexit have been a real challenge, not least for customers outside the EU who over recent weeks have literally not known what import duties they might have to pay from one week to the next.

“The majority of our sales go to export,” Julian Heyworth explains, “and the joint venture with Cepeda extends our reach significantly, affording us access to Spanish-speaking countries throughout South America.”

CepedaMeltog offers a full turnkey service, specialising in the manufacture and supply of machinery used in making tin cans for both promotional and commodity packaging.

Starting with a pre-printed metal sheet, automated production lines can turn out as many as 600 ‘ready to fill’ cans per minute. Click here to see the production lines in action.
